bpTHE ESSENTIAL GUIDE FOR ANYONE WANTING TO HIKE INTO THE GRAND CANYON/ppAWARD-WINNING FINALIST:/p/bpNational Best Books 2007 Award in the Travel:Guides Category!/pp2008 Benjamin Franklin Book Award in the Recreation/Sports Category!/ppBest First Book by New Publisher in the Arizona Book Publishing Association's 2008 Book Awards!/pp2008 Next Generation Indie Book Award in the Travel/Travel Guides Category!/ppHave you ever wondered just what it takes to hike into the Grand Canyon? It is one of the most spectacular natural wonders in the world, and the only way to really see it in all its splendor is by going below the rim. On a partly cloudy day when the clouds cause shadows to undulate in, out, and around the multi-colored rock formations it is incomparable in its beauty. To venture and explore into the canyon is to gain a fresh perspective that very few of the nearly five million visitors each year ever dare to undertake./pp This book is a common sense guide written especially for the first time day hiker or backpacker wanting to explore the Grand Canyon. It includes information on the kind of equipment one needs, how to apply for permits, rules and restrictions, trail descriptions, and other tips - all geared to the most popular, easily accessible, and only maintained trails into the canyon - the Central Corridor Trails (Bright Angel, South Kaibab and North Kaibab Trails). All other trails into the canyon are considered wilderness (unmaintained) trails, require advanced route finding skills, and are not recommended for first-time canyon hikers. Currently, no other hiking book focuses exclusively on these most popular and accessible trails. Information in the book is presented by first time author Brian Lane in a clear, concise, and entertaining manner, featuring full color maps and over fifty photos, providing the reader with a real sense of what it takes to hike the canyon./ppbHikernut's Grand Canyon Companion is a must read for anyone thinking about hiking into the canyon!/b/pp Also...be sure to visit the author's Grand Canyon Hiker's Blog for updated information at: aSenseofNature.com/p

Visiting the Grand CanyonÂ?s North Rim is a unique experience. Just ten miles across the abyss from the canyonÂ?s busy South Rim, the two settings are worlds apart. Fewer than ten percent of park visitors find their way to the remote North Rim. Sublime beauty, rugged terrain, and quiet solitude await those who do. Those who visit the park with this book in hand take a personal guide. In these pages author Stewart Aitchison shares his knowledge of the plant and animal communities, geologic forces, and human history that set this place apart. And the stories donÂ?t stop at the parkÂ?s boundary. They stretch across the broad Arizona Strip to provide insights into the vast scenery of this little-known land.
Named Brighty by the prospector who befriended him, he remained a free spirit at heart. But when a ruthless claim-jumper murdered the prospector, loyal Brighty risked everything to bring the killer to justice.
Brighty's adventures have delighted generations of readers, and he has become the symbol of a joyous way of life. Some people say that you can even see his spirit roving the canyon on moonlit nights-forever wild, forever free.

Grand Obsession: Harvey Butchart and the Exploration of Grand Canyon

Winner of a 2008 National Outdoor Book Award, a 2008 Independent Publisher Book Award (IPPY), and named a Book of the Year by the Pima County Library, "Grand Obsession" continues to gather recognition for its striking portrayal of a man who felt compelled to do what no one had dared attempt in modern times: explore the deepest, most inhospitable reaches of the Grand Canyon, crown jewel of America's national parks - something which took decades to achieve and exacted a great personal cost.
Writers Elias Butler and Thomas M. Myers (co-author of the book "Over the Edge: Death in Grand Canyon") poured 15 years of research into this book. Legendary Grand Canyoneer Harvey Butchart climbed, hiked, floated and bushwhacked 12,000 pioneering miles below the rim during a 42-year obsession with the world-famous gorge. He became the first man to walk across Grand Canyon National Park, doing so in 1963 just ahead of writer Colin Fletcher, who famously described Butchart in his classic adventure book "The Man Who Walked Through Time."
Here for the first time is Harvey's life story: his early years as a fatherless child in a mystical, rugged mountain range in China, his struggles in America during the Great Depression, and finally, his all-consuming drive for greatness by exploring one of the West's last unknown wildernesses. Butchart's accomplishments found favor with the public, but also led to the death of his favorite hiking partner and took a decades-long toll on his marriage.
The authors retrace Harvey's footsteps on dangerous cliff edges while chronicling his thrilling exploits, heart-breaking tragedies, and lasting triumphs. Part biography, part modern-day adventure, "Grand Obsession" will take you deeper into the soul of this fascinating man - and Grand Canyon - than you have ever been before.
Contains over 170 photographs, many never-before-published, and Harvey Butchart's hand-stenciled maps showing his treks in Grand Canyon. The paperback edition contains black-and-white maps, the hardback edition contains color maps.
Butchart's feats continue to receive recognition, most recently by the Arizona State Board of Names, which in 2008 designated a rocky summit "Butchart Butte" within Grand Canyon National Park.
The two men begin a deep friendship that sets off a chain of unsettling and surprising events involving their families and friends for years to come.

This murky rumination on keeping faith in our troubled times was an early sign that writer-director Lawrence Kasdan (ISilverado/I) was losing his once-powerful grasp on the art of storytelling. Set in modern Los Angeles--with all its random violence, venality, ubiquitous police presence, earthquakes, and dreams--the film concerns an unusual intersection of lives and chance occurrences that alter everyone's perspective on destiny. Kasdan, very understandably, is attempting to create an experience for viewers as intuitive as the undefined forces propelling his characters. But from the outside looking in, there isn't enough internal logic in the story to help us connect the dots. Steve Martin has an interesting part as a garish film producer who undergoes a change in priorities after being assaulted on the street. I--Tom Keogh/I
No one had ever explored the fabled Grand Canyon; to adventurers of that era it was a region almost as mysterious as Atlantis -- and as perilous.

The ten men set out down the mighty Colorado River in wooden rowboats. Six survived. Drawing on rarely examined diaries and journals, Down the Great Unknown is the first book to tell the full, true story.

Grand Canyon Guide: Your Complete Guide to the Grand Canyon

Whether your interest in the Grand Canyon is in a quick look from a few of the rim view points, a week-long whitewater trip on the Colorado River, a stay in a lodge on the very edge of the canyon, a walk along a rim trail, camping in the rim forest, or hiking down into the canyon, this book is for you. Grand Canyon Guide is based on my dozens of years experience exploring the Canyon.

This Kindle book is designed to complement the companion website, www.GrandCanyonGuide.net. The website has much of the same information, but as it is a website, I am able to update it more frequently. Although I provide many links within the book, some websites may not work well on the Kindle. Links that reference chapters within this book have chapter names, such as Contents, while links to external websites always have the Web address, such as www.GrandCanyonGuide.net. Remember, you can alway abort a web page load by clicking the five-way controller, and then pressing the Back button. All the links in the book, and many more, are on the website.

Grand Canyon Guide has two major parts: Activities covers how to get to the Grand Canyon and what do do once you're there. Exploring The Canyon is for those who want to learn more about the national park, national monument, national forest, and Indian reservations that all have a part in managing the lands of the Grand Canyon region. You can also learn more about the natural and human history of the Grand Canyon.
