Hoover Dam Facts and Tours of the Dam from Las Vegas
Where is the Hoover Dam located?
The Hoover Dam is on the border of the states of Arizona and Nevada. It was built across part of the Colorado River at a point called Black Canyon. The dam holds back the Colorado River water forming Lake Mead.
Some facts about the Hoover Dam:
The building of the Hoover dam was an awesome demonstration of mans ability to create vast feats of engineering.
From Las Vegas it takes around 45 minutes to drive to the Hoover Dam. Many trips to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas go through Boulder City, and do a short stop off at the Hoover Dam. This stop is purely a photo opportunity and there is not enough time to visit the visitor's centre at the dam. I love my pics from the Hoover Dam the stopping points for photos are awesomely located so that you can see right across the dam getting a good panoramic view.
If simply having a pic of the Hoover dam is not enough for you then there are trips that just go to the Hoover Dam enabling you to discover the history and explore the immense engineering feats that were utilised to build this amazing structure.
Vehicles crossing the Hoover Dam bridge
You can drive across the top of the Hoover Dam on highway 93. When crossing the dam all vehicles can be searched at the security checkpoints on each side of the dam, this has been the case since 2001. Don't worry about this though as it is usually doesn't take much time at all.
Coach trips are allowed at the Dam but they insist that no luggage is carried. This has been the case since 9/11 and it means that if you are on a tour then your coach cannot take you to see the Dam until you've deposited your bags in your hotel.
Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge
The Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge is expected to be completed sometime around late 2010. This bridge will provide a crossing point for vehicles that currently can't cross the Hoover dam, such as large trucks. Highway 93 across the dam is the most direct way from Las Vegas to points East. All other routes are a significant detour so this new bridge will provide a much quicker alternative.

Some facts about the Hoover Dam:
The building of the Hoover dam was an awesome demonstration of mans ability to create vast feats of engineering.
- It took less than five years to build (1931 to 1935)- this was two years ahead of schedule.
- It contains 3,250,000 cubic yards (2,600,000 cubic meters) of concrete. Some of this concrete still will not have cured today.
- The workers who built the dam needed to live near to the construction site so a city was built in the vicinity and was named Boulder City.
